Kids and Contacts: Is Your Child Ready?

How do you know if your teen is ready to make the switch from glasses to contact lenses? Contact lenses might be a more suitable option for children who are active in sports and always on the go. However, it's important that your teen take proper care of his or her contact lenses to maintain good eye health and avoid harmful infections.

While there is no specific age that is right for every teen, there are a few questions parents can ask themselves before making the switch. Caring for contact lenses takes a certain level of maturity and responsibility. Ask yourself the following questions to help you decide whether your teen is ready for the responsibility.

Does your teenager:

  • Take out the garbage without being asked?
  • Clean up his/her bedroom?
  • Help with other household chores?
  • Follow through with school projects?
  • Take initiative without being reminded?

If you answered yes to all or most questions above, your teen is most likely ready for the responsibility of contact lenses.

Advances in contact lens solutions allow convenient ways to properly care for contacts without using multiple bottles. OPTI-FREE® RepleniSH® Multi-Purpose Disinfection Solution can be used without rubbing and works overnight to clean, recondition, disinfect, and remove protein deposits right in the case.

While contact lenses require some amount of responsibility, there's no harm in trying. Remember, the decision is reversible, so if it doesn't work, it's not a big deal. When a patient is fitted for contact lenses, he or she is given a free trial pair to ensure a quality fit. If your teen responds well to the contacts and the responsibility, it may be time to switch. If your teen shows signs of irritation or lack of responsibility for the lenses, you can simply choose not to order more and revert back to glasses.
